2011 EXHIBIT AT THE NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART, RENO, NV
4 DESIGNERS PRESENT FIBER, CLAY, GLASS & PAINT AT BARTLEY RANCH
Jill Altmann, Toni Lowden, Marla Gartrell and Mimi Patrick bring work created in their home studios to the Historic Huffaker Schoolhouse at Bartley Ranch. The diverse offerings include jewelry, fused glass, pottery, paintings, tapestry, hand knitted and hand woven textilesThe focus of JILL ALTMANN’S handwoven and knit clothing is on vibrant color and textures using a variety of natural eco fibers together with yarns and structures that STRETCH. She creates textiles that collapse, undulate, and flow around HUMAN SCULPTURE. Jill has shown her work throughout the US in galleries, invitational shows and retail stores. Juried shows and awards include American Craft Council and Nevada WILD WOMEN. She is a former ARTOWN board director.

Toni Lowden is known as a tapestry weaver, having produced large commissions for architects and interior designers whose work focused on banks, hospitals and residences. After completing her MFA at Fiberworks/JFK in Berkeley she began exploring abstract painting, collage, and altered art. Following her Trustee terms at the Nevada Museum of Art. she founded Artouring, which took convention visitors and local groups to see artists working. Having recently turned the program into a non-profit organization, it now operates as an annual “Reno Open Studios”. Her current exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art “Biology is “Technology” and runs through August 21st 2011.

Marla Gartrell followed in her mother’s footsteps with oil painting and followed in her dear friend’s footsteps with firing glass in a kiln that is called glass fusion. She has created one of a kind functional and non-functional fused glass and original oil paintings that have found homes throughout the United States. “Both mediums allow me to work in my home studios that I open up once a year, in September with Reno Open Studios.” Website: www.marlagartrell.com

Mimi Patrick is celebrating her 40th year working in clay. She says she is starting to get good at it. Mimi’s new emphasis is on hand built forms using stamps, roulettes and texture to create lively and rich surface designs. The forms range from baskets to covered jars to large platters. Work thrown on the potters wheel will also be included in the show. Mimi’s studio and gallery are located in Gold Hill (south of Virginia City).
